Lemon Water – why drink it daily?
Have you ever experienced your gut feeling so out of whack you could barely function? That was me a few weeks ago until I started drinking hot lemon water. UGH!!!
I eat healthy most of the time but typically have a piece of chocolate or 2 or 3 on any given day. I pretty much eliminate carbs now since I find they tend to burn the upper part of my abdomen as it’s going down. I’m assuming it’s a gluten intolerance or yeast that suddenly has come into play. Oddly enough fermented breads don’t effect me in the slightest.
I saw The Upside a few weeks back with Brian Cranston, Kevin Hart, and Nicole Kidman. OMG what an uplifting movie if you haven’t seen it already!
At the movies I had a small bag of plain popcorn which I know I’m best not to have. It totally wrecks havoc on my system for days. However, the popcorn wasn’t the main issue, just the icing on the cake – I believe.
That next day I decided to make Seeded Crackers. Totally healthy in every way imaginable. The problem was, they were so incredibly delicious that they became addicting. I literally couldn’t pull myself away from them. I’d have one Seeded Cracker then go back for another, and another, and another!
I absolutely couldn’t keep my hands off these crackers, a recipe I’ll share in my next post. However, I think with the popcorn already in my body and not digesting as regular food would, then packing in all these seeds, caused a major traffic jam in my system.
When I tried to eat a small piece of a skinned roasted chicken, it literally felt as though it got stuck just below my breast bone in that little hollowed out section before going into my stomach.
I felt like I was going to die. The pain was so excruciating! It wasn’t like I was choking, but more a feeling of the chicken lodging itself and having no room to move down.
I stretched my arms out over the kitchen counter standing up, and arched my back moving my head down close to the counter in an effort to get relief, and feel as though I could breathe without pain. It was horrendous!!! I honestly felt like I was going to have to take a trip to the ER, but managed to get some comfort.
I talked with my doctor explaining what had occurred, and absolutely felt it was from the combination of foods I had ingested those two days. He felt it had to do with my esophagus, and I questioned if it could be a hiatal hernia or even an ulcer? His suggestion was to try and ride it out and if not better in a day to come in.
Three weeks later I am finally feeling like my gut is back to normal and I’m certain I owe it to Hot Lemon Water.
Why?
It seems that hot or warm lemon water has the ability to flush out toxins, aiding the digestive system and helping it to eliminate waste.
Lemon water on its own is also a great source but not the same as hot lemon water.
When the lemon water is hot, and taken first thing in the morning before eating, it opens and expands your blood vessels, and increases blood flow to your gastrointestinal system, in preparation for the nutrients you’re about to ingest. Plus it not only flushes out the liver (and other organs) of all the toxins from the day before, but also removes fats stored in your system. The results besides feeling better can also promote weight loss.
What is it about lemons that are so good?
Lemons are:
- rich in calcium, vitamin C, pectin fiber, which is beneficial for colon health and also a powerful antibacterial
- medicinal
- contains traces of iron and vitamin A
- great source of citric acid, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium.
- prevents the growth of bacteria that causes infections & diseases
- reduces inflammation & helps to dissolve uric acid
- nourishes brain and nerve cells
- gives skin a youthful glow – in fact simply squeezing lemon juice on your skin makes it feel soft.
- helps prevent the growth of cancer
Lemons also help to maintain the immune system by protecting it from infections. It purifies the blood, balances the PH in your body, as well as acts as an antiseptic.
Lemons almost sound too good to be true, and they’ve been right under our nose all this time.
Lemons and even limes are life changing foods providing us with excellent nutrition, mineral bioavailability, and organ detoxification. With so many positive health benefits we owe it to our bodies and ourselves to take advantage of this inexpensive piece of fruit. If you don’t believe me, read up on lemons for yourself.
I can tell you in just 3 weeks my body feels cleansed and while maybe not totally free of toxins, I believe it’s well on the way.
Try drinking hot lemon water every morning before eating or drinking anything else for just one week, and report back here to let me know what you think. I can almost guarantee you’ll create a new morning habit to jumpstart your day!

Hungry for more? Savor these!
Sounds like an esophageal spasm to me. I’ve had them on occasion since I was a child, mostly when I’m eating a dense food like bread. I’ve had a friend who had to have her esophagus dilated and that helped her. Anyway, whatever it was, I hope it doesn’t happen again. P.S. Looking forward to the cracker recipe!
It never happened to me before and was scary. I hope it never happens again. I’m definitely feeling better now. Thanks.
Interesting post — I love lemon, and had no idea it was so healthy. Used to drink lemon juice in cold water a lot (basically unsweetened lemonade) but rarely have had hot lemon water. Should give it a try — t hanks.
Honestly John I wasn’t aware of it either but have started a new morning regimen and feel great. Just remember to brush as my friend Sue mentioned below. If not it can ruin the enamel on your teeth while improving other aspects of your body. Go figure!
I drink lemon water with ACV daily! So good for us, isn’t it!
Yes it is. I actually can tell a difference in how my body feels.
Just a warning….I drank hot lemon water since early 90’s. Loved my hot lemon water in the mornings.
I have never had acid reflux…no burning….Lemon water turns into a base when digesting it.
BUT, a few years ago my dentist said I had erosion on my teeth. We started talking about the culprit: lemon water.
ALWAYS drink cold lemon water through a straw. If you enjoy hot lemon water, after your lemon drink, rinse out your mouth and then brush your teeth.
I am more conservative about the amount of lemon water I drink now. Do know, I drank this every morning. Btw, I did go through comprehensive dental work to alter the erosion on my teeth.
Hi Sue, I’m sorry I’m just seeing this along with many other comments. Thank you for sharing this.
I did mention in my post that it’s important to brush after drinking lemon water based on my research. However, I appreciate you giving all of us (readers) the heads up, because it can be a real issue and an expensive fix.
Thank you for your comment. Hope you’re doing well, it’s so great to hear from you.
