Healthy & Delicious Green Smoothie!

I’ve had a crazy week of cooking classes but I’m finally having a minute to sit down and add a new post.

I’m not sure how many of you eat raw food on a regular basis or what your eating habits are.  However, I love to eat Raw Foods but still like my fish, beef and chicken as well, keeping a good balance.
When I eat raw food, food that grows from the ground, “living food,” not food that’s been cooked above 120F degrees, I feel energetic and ready to tackle the world. It’s truly incredible how it makes you feel and quite frankly, it’s very easy to prepare.  Best of all it doesn’t heat up the kitchen!
Last night I taught a Raw Food class and had a great time, my students did as well, and all were totally blown away at how delicious everything tasted.  They were shocked!  They didn’t know Raw Food could taste so good. With a list of recipes the one that surprised them most was the Green Smoothie.  Each of my students, of all ages, agreed it was fantastic and were happy to drink any additional leftovers.
Of course, I served this to my family, and both my husband and daughter refused to try it because it was green.  My son tried it, and loved it, as do I. You may think it sounds disgusting but trust me, this is worth trying.  It’s delicious and so healthy.  Have a swig of this every morning, afternoon or for a snack and you’ll be happy you did.
Here’s the recipe, please let me know what you think of it.

Green Smoothie

1 cup green grapes
1/2 cup pineapple chunks
2 cups fresh spinach, packed
1/2 ripe banana, peeled
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup ice cubes

  1. Place all ingredients into the blender in the order listed and secure lid - I used my Vitamix Blender.
  2. Turn machine on and slowly increase speed to high.
  3. Blend for 1 minute or until desired consistency is reached.  Serve immediately.

  1. Interesting – I wonder if your husband and daughter would have refused to try this set of ingredients combined in a salad? If it was the liquid (and the color of green, of course) that turned them off? At any rate, great looking smoothie! I usually don’t add savory ingredients to mine, but it’s a terrific idea. Thanks.!

    • I told my husband that everything in the drink he eats all the time. He wasn’t interested. I’m sure is was because it was green. Please try this. You’ll be amazed at how incredible it tastes.

  2. This is very healthy recipe I will surely make it soon.

  3. It’s a very beautiful looking smoothie my friend, a very different set of Ingredients I would like to try 🙂

    Choc Chip Uru

  4. Sounds good ! I would gladly drink that 😀 I love color and I’m sure it tastes wonderful !

  5. It tastes so delicious I could drink a pitcher in one sitting.

  6. Now this is a green smoothie I could easily slurp down! It’s the ones with tons of wheat grass that are less appealing :/ Great recipe, Vicki! Hope you have a splendid holiday weekend~

  7. I made a curried quinoa salad today and most of it was raw. I did cook the quinoa because I don’t think I could get it down raw. 🙂

I should have made this smoothie!

    • I think a diet of raw fruit and veggies plus lean meats and healthy grains is best. All raw is hard to do 100% of the time plus you don’t get all the nutrients your body needs on a full Raw Food diet. A healhly balance is the key IMO. Your salad sounds delicious and I love curry.

  8. Well I for one do not think its disgusting I lovet he idea of having grapes in my dirnk they are of course the basis of wine! Lol… this sounds more than a healthy balance it’s incredibly worth drinking… nice one!

    • I didn’t even think of that but yes grapes are in wine. I often freeze my grapes and add them to beverages like sangria instead of ice cubes. It’s definitely worth drinking for the health benefits and flavor. I hope you’ll try it.

  9. I find it so wonderful to read and learn from blogs such as yours. I don’t mind the ‘green’ smoothie at all [looks terrific!]! I simply have not been ‘into’ smooothies, but do eat all the ingredients. Personally I find that more and more of what sits on my plate does tend to be raw and it tastes good 🙂 ! I may be grilling a steak or a marinated chicken thigh and take out some carrots or zucchini to steam, and, instead reach for the grater, make a pile, mix, add some grated onion & a favourite dressing and feel ‘blessed’ at the end of the meal!

    • Thank you for the compliment. I think with so much out there on eating healthy and raw food that many of us have discovered how incredible our bodies feel after eating this way. I don’t eat raw 100% but try to as often as I can and without question feel more energized. I think a balance of raw fruit and veggies, grains and lean meats is the key to healthy living. We all stray but so long as we try to stick to a healthy diet most of the time we will feel healthy and more alive!

  10. I really wish that I could attend your class! 🙂 Your green smoothies look so beautiful. When I hear “green” it’s usually vegetable and I didn’t expect to see green grapes! I love veggies and fruits and would drink green smoothies anyway, but now I’m very curious to try the grape version! Vicki, hope you are having a wonderful holiday! 🙂

  11. Hi there, that’s so great you’ve been teaching people about raw food and green smoothies. I recovered from chronic fatigue syndrome and lost loads of weight when I started drinking them daily. I feel amazing too, so full of life. This looks like a great recipe.
Yes the colour does put some people off. I had to dare my husband to try a sip as he wouldn’t try them for years, but he did try it, loved it and now he has one every day so I’m so glad I said that to him.
Have you ever thought about adding dark berries or an inch of raw beetroot to your green smoothies. These will turn the smoothie purple or bright red and it will make it much more appealing and nobody would know there was spinach hiding in there.
If you want more green smoothie recipes, I have a massive collection on
    Many thanks

    • I’ve used raspberries before and it’s beautiful and have wanted to try beet root especially since its so good for you but haven’t yet.

I visited your site yesterday and you had lots of great recipes. I also purchased an app that’s great called, “Green Smoothies” from the Raw Family. It was $1.99 and besides recipes includes a wealth of information plus categorizes the recipes by food group. You should check it out. You may want to create your own.

  12. I don’t eat much raw food, except salads, fruit and sometimes a bit of snacks. But you are right: it’s all about balance.
    The smoothie looks great!

  13. this is fabulous! I’m always looking for a really easy and healthy (and delicious) way to start the day and this is it! bookmarked 🙂

  14. I know you’ll love it. It’s sooooo good!

  15. A raw foods class – what fun that would be! Love this smoothie! The addition of the pineapple and grape is quite different from other green smoothies I’ve seen. I love this idea! Can’t wait to try it!

  16. I’m not a big fan of eating food in the raw but this smoothie does sound delicious! Pineapple and spinach is such an interesting combination.

    • Raw Food eating does not include fish or meats, merely fruits, veggies, nuts, grains, etc. If you eat fruits, veggies, salads, raw nuts then you’ve eaten raw food. Simply combining many of these together creates wonderful tasting dishes. There are of course more complex recipes that involve dehydrating, soaking, and sprouting but none IMO are really complicated.

I don’t strictly eat raw food but can say when I do my body knows it. I just feel better, alive and energetic.

I hope you’ll try this recipe, even if it sounds disgusting as some have told me and then after sampling they’re shocked at how good it tastes.

  17. Great colour. I take it the spinach didn’t overpower the smoothie? Must try it!

  18. Hi Vicki,

This is the kind of drink that I need to kick start a long hectic day. This will be a nice snack idea for our coming down-under summer.

Nice to know through blogging 😀 Now following you via blogger, twitter and pinterest 😀

  19. i have been adding more raw foods and smoothies in my diet as i am losing my pregnancy weight. i think it is the healthiest approach.

i will pick up some grapes tomorrow so i can make your green smoothie 🙂

    • Just while I was practicing recipes and reviewing my notes for my raw food class I lost 8 pounds without even realizing it. Crazy but it works and makes you feel great.

That said, if you have any health issues you should always check with your doctor first before eating solely raw food. Plus just eating raw food doesn’t give you all the nutrients you need so it’s a good idea to keep a balanced diet including lean meats as well. IMO.

  20. Okay, you’ve convinced me. I will try it. I think this could be a great addition to a healthy balanced diet.

  21. okay Vicky, I’m cringing at the thought, but I copy pasted and printed it out. I’ll let you know how it goes. After this summer of trying every smoothy I could think of for Eric’s jaw injury, what’s one more!

  22. Yum! I love this smootie. Sounds so scrumptious and healthy!

  23. Kermit would love this. LOL
A great way to get even people who say they don’t like spinach to enjoy it. 😉

  24. I’ve made these myself and they are really good! I bought a large bag of mixed frozen fruit to use in mine although fresh is better, of course. It just made it simpler to get them made on a regular basis.

  25. I think it is great idea to mix fruits and vegetable in smoothies. It is hard for kids to drink Kale juice or spinach juice. Byt by adding fresh fruits it makes the drinks so much tastier and easy to swallow for them. Our family have been enjoying carrot, apple, orange mix and now we got another healthy drink option. Thanks for sharing. This is great!

    • That’s so great that you serve these to your children. Best to start them off young then it’s normal to them.

There’s a great app called, “green smoothies” you should check it out. It’s $1.99 and has great information plus 100s of green smoothie recipes.

  26. This is my boys’ very favorite smoothie! I’ve been making it for years. We make a whole lot of different smoothies, but this one is the most frequently requested. Love that it doesn’t taste green at all!

  27. this is really awesome!

  28. Valuable information ..I am delighted to read this article..thank you for giving us this useful information. Great walk-through. I value this post.

  29. Yum! The green smoothie looks too good. Super healthy too. Thank you for sharing your recipe!
